Breast Augmentation, Pre-op to Recovery
Pre-Operative Considerations – Jacksonville Breast Enhancement
Patients undergoing breast augmentation should refrain from non-steroidal medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, alleve, etc. In addition, there are many other medications to avoid, something Dr. Desai and his plastic surgery team discusses with you prior to your cosmetic surgery.
General Procedure – Jacksonville Breast Enlargement
Breast augmentation is commonly performed on an outpatient basis at a hospital or surgical center while the patient is under general anesthesia. There are several options for implant type, implant position, and incision placement. To learn more about these variables, please visit the breast augmentation informational page.
During the procedure, local anesthetics are used around the breast to block the nerves that produce pain before the pain cascade and cycle begins. A precise pocket is created under the breast for either the saline or silicone implant. After the implant is placed, the incision is closed in several layers to prevent implant exposure or scar widening.
If the patient desires, on pain pump that delivers continuous local anesthetic to the implant pocket can be placed and maintained for 3-4 days to help with the post-operative pain control.
Recovery Process – Jacksonville Breast Augmentation
Post-operative recovery begins with plenty of fluids and return to walking as soon as possible. Bandages are placed over the incision for about a week, but patients can shower the same day.
Patients are asked to take a short course of antibiotics after the operation and are given antibiotics before to prevent an infection. A supportive bra is worn to help support the breast as the incisions heal and the implants assume their position.
The pain is generally controlled with oral medications and if chosen by the patient a local drip of anesthetic to maximize the chance of a fast recovery. All sutures are placed under the skin and are dissolvable.
As the incision begins to heal (i.e. after 3 weeks), there are a number of things you can use to help minimize the size and appearance of the scar. Massaging the scar with firm finger pressure will help the scar blend in and decrease the swelling. In addition, paper tape and silicone gel sheeting have both been shown to help minimize the scars with time. Some commercially available products such as Mederma or vitamin E may also have some benefit. To learn more, please schedule a consultation with Dr. Desai and our Jacksonville cosmetic surgery team.
