Silicone Breast Implants

Serving Patients in St. Augustine and Jacksonville, Florida

Jacksonville Breast Augmentation

If you’ve chosen to enjoy the benefits of breast augmentation, one of the most important decisions you’ll have to make is whether to receive silicone or saline breast implants.

Filled with a cohesive silicone gel that provides a natural look and feel, silicone breast implants are the preferred option for many women who undergo breast augmentation. During your breast enhancement consultation, Jacksonville, Florida, plastic surgeon Dr. Ankit Desai will discuss the differences between silicone and saline breast implants to help you select the best option for your body type and aesthetic goals.

Modern Silicone Breast Implants

Some women have concerns regarding the safety of silicone breast implants due to the fact that silicone breast implants were temporarily removed from the market in 1992 because of health concerns related to silicone leaks. After additional testing and studies showed no connection between silicone breast implants and disease, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2006 approved silicone breast implants as a safe breast augmentation option for women age 22 and older.

During the span in which silicone breast implants were not available, a number of improvements were made to their design and durability. Today’s silicone breast implants feature a soft yet strong silicone shell that holds a thick gel that replicates the feel of natural fatty tissue as opposed to the liquid gel used in the past.

Benefits of Silicone Breast Implants

Although silicone breast implants can be used in almost every breast augmentation procedure, they are especially well suited to women who are thinner or have petite frames.

Silicone breast implants generally offer a number of benefits over saline breast implants, including:

  • Silicone breast implants are less likely to wrinkle, ripple or fold than saline breast implants
  • The edges of silicone breast implants are less palpable than those of saline breast implants
  • Silicone breast implants typically feel softer and more natural than saline breast implants
  • Silicone breast implants tend to be more durable and less prone to leak or rupture than saline breast implants

Depending on your individual body type and desired results, silicone breast implants can also provide more flexibility in choosing your breast contour and profile. For additional information about silicone and saline breast implants, please see our Questions About Breast Implants page.
