Tummy Tucks for Men

Serving Patients in Jacksonville, Florida

Florida AbdominoplastyLike many men, you probably work hard to be healthy by eating a good diet and exercising regularly. Chances are that, as you have aged, you have found it more and more difficult to achieve your goal body shape, particularly in your stomach and abdomen. Even avid marathon runners develop fat deposits as they age, simply because our bodies store fat differently as we get older.

Cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Ankit Desai believes a tummy tuck, or lipoabdominoplasty, is the best way to address the combination of excess fat and skin in your abdominal and lower abdominal areas. The name lipoabdominoplasty comes from a combination of abdominoplasty, the removal and tightening of excess skin of the abdomen, and liposuction. A tummy tuck is not a good way to lose weight but is instead designed to reduce fat deposits that remain stubbornly in place despite a healthy diet and exercise.

Tummy Tuck Procedure

Before you schedule your procedure, you will first meet with Dr. Desai to discuss your concerns and goals and to ask any questions you have. He will help you determine if a tummy tuck is necessary to achieve your aesthetic goals, or if liposuction alone will be sufficient.

Once you have agreed that a tummy tuck is right for you, your surgery will be scheduled. During your surgery, Dr. Desai will first remove the excess fat from your abdomen and love handles using tumescent liposuction (liposuction using numbing fluid injected into your fat deposits). After liposuction, Dr. Desai will make the appropriate incisions to your upper and lower abdomen and remove excess skin, before tightening and suturing the skin in place.

Candidates for Tummy Tucks for Men

Not every man is a candidate for a tummy tuck. In particular, severely overweight men or inactive men whose bodies would respond to exercise and diet should not rely on surgery to achieve what they can achieve for themselves. However, many men find diet and exercise ineffective in reducing fat in some parts of the abdomen, and other men may be candidates for a tummy tuck due to excess skin.

Good candidates for tummy tucks may include men who have:

  • Excess skin resulting from bariatric surgery
  • Excess skin due to weight loss
  • Stubborn fat deposits that are unresponsive to diet and exercise
  • Awkwardly placed excess fat and skin in the abdomen

Preparation for Surgery

Although anyone undergoing plastic surgery should quit smoking at least three weeks beforehand, this is particularly important for a more invasive procedure such as a tummy tuck. Smoking restricts blood flow throughout the body, making it more difficult for your body to heal. You should quit smoking as soon as you decide to have plastic surgery in order to avoid complications and setbacks during your recovery period.
