Tummy Tucks for Men

Friday, August 27th, 2010

Any man may develop the most vigorous exercise routine in the country but still be unable to achieve that perfect six-pack. The fact is that your body needs a certain amount of fat in order to be healthy. Unfortunately, sometimes that fat is not exactly where you would like it to be and may gather stubbornly in your abdominal region. If you follow a healthy diet and exercise regularly but still have excess stomach fat, a tummy tuck can help you achieve the healthy masculine shape you strive for.

Tummy tucks for men are becoming popular as sport enthusiasts and healthcare professionals admit that even vigorous exercise cannot achieve every aesthetic goal. A tummy tuck is the surgical tightening of the skin in the lower and upper abdominal regions and is often paired with liposuction to create a smoother appearance.

A tummy tuck is not a good way to lose weight, but it is a great way to tighten an abdomen that is flabby or has loose skin due to:

• Bariatric surgery
• Massive weight loss
• Exercise-resistant fat deposit(s)

I returned from the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure National Meeting in Dallas and had a chance to experience the positive energy and learn about the substantial good the organization does for women all over the world in an effort to increase surivival from breast cancer.  I hope I can help to raise even more money to help the women of Jacksonville diagnosed with breat cancer.

My practice continues to see younger and younger women with breast cancer and offer them all options for breast reconstruction. In our Jacksonville breast reconstruction center, patients can have tissue expander reconstruction, one-stage silicone breast implant breast reconstruction, and DIEP flap reconstruction.  See our informational page to learn more:

Breast Augmentation

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

The decision to have any surgery is a big one that can never be taken lightly. Elective surgery, such as breast augmentation, requires just as much consideration, research, and faith in your surgeon as a surgery that is not elective.

Board-certified cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Ankit Desai at the Desai Center of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery performs hundreds of breast augmentation procedures each year and firmly believes in educating his patients thoroughly prior to surgery, so they are fully aware of what to expect before, during and after breast implants are placed. There are many factors that must be taken into consideration when deciding if you are a good candidate for breast enlargement surgery. Not everyone is a good candidate, but most women over the age of 18 do qualify for this procedure. After a thorough evaluation, Dr. Desai will discuss the various breast augmentation options with you and offer his opinion on which is best for you.

There are four different approaches Dr. Desai can take when performing breast augmentation. You will have one of the following:

  • Periareolar – This procedure requires an incision around the nipple-areola area
  • Inframammary – This incision is made at the base of the breast
  • Transaxillary endoscopic augmentation mammoplasty – This procedure creates an incision within the armpit, and a camera is used to create a very precise pocket under the muscle for the implant
  • TUBA (Transumbilical Breast Augmentation) – In this procedure, an incision is made around the belly button

Dr. Desai will discuss the pros and cons of each procedure with you during your consultation. He will also explain the different types of implants used (saline, silicone), and what your recovery will entail.

If you live in the Jacksonville, Florida area and are contemplating breast augmentation, please contact Florida cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Ankit Desai, to discuss the many breast enhancement surgery choices available today.

Jacksonville Breast Reconstruction

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Increasingly patients are being advised to avoid immediate breast reconstruction as it may delay chemotherapy. This misnomer had filtered through our community, but is not supported by the medical literature or at other institutions. In my opinion as well as many academic institutions, immediate reconstruction does not delay chemotherapy, does not increase local recurrence, and does not decrease survival. These are facts as far as I am concerned. There are several studies that demonstrate no delay in the onset of chemotherapy when you compare patients undergoing immediate breast reconstruction to those that had mastectomy alone.

In fact, in the July’s Cancer journal, a database of 17,000 patients were evaluated and there was a survival benefit for those undergoing immediate breast reconstruction. Now there are likely other factors at play. I am not promoting that you will live longer if you undergo immediate breast reconstruction.  But, at the very least I conclude there is no survival difference between those undergoing immediate breast reconstruction and those undergoing mastectomy alone.

So even if the falsehood that is filtering through the Jacksonville area that immediate breast reconstruction delays chemotherapy was true, does it matter if there is no difference in cancer recurrence or overall survival. There are so many benefits to immediate reconstruction that have been documented in the medical literature. These include improved self-image, a psychological benefit, and better aesthetic results.  In fact, in one study, when women were asked  greater than 75% who waited to have reconstruction after they completed their cancer treatment and mastectomy wished they had undergone an immediate breast reconstruction.

To learn more about all the options for both immediate and delayed breast reconstuction, call our office to schedule a consultation at (904)-262-3372. We work with most insurance companies and would be happy to educate you more on the advantages and disadvantages of all the techniques and options. We strive to give all of our cancer patients breasts that appear un-operated and that are better than before the mastectomy. We hope we can bring some light to the entire process for our patients.
