Breast augmentation, which is also referred as mammoplasty, is an elective outpatient surgery to enlarge the breast volume thereby increasing the overall breast size. Typically the breast size is altered with breast implants, which are filled with saline, silicone gel, or highly cohesive silicone gel. Breast implants are available in multiple shapes, sizes, and may be placed beneath or above the pectoralis muscle.
Another breast augmentation alternative is “auto-augmentation”, which is an excellent option for those who would like to use their own tissue to increase the size of their breast. This process is referred to as autologous fat grafting, is best for those that desire a modest breast enhancement and may be coupled with a standard breast augmentation. Auto-augmentation requires liposuction to acquire fat (usually from the abdomen, hips, or flanks), the fat is filtered in the operating room, and then the fat is dispersed into the breast to increase breast size.
Most often the incision is concealed at the inframammary fold, but may also be placed around the nipple/areola or in the armpit/axilla if you are a candidate and if you desire this placement. All sutures are placed under the skin, dissolve on their own, and do not require suture removal.
At your first consultation, we will review all your implant options and help you choose the best implant for you, breast implant size, and decide on incision placement. We also have a sample implant trial system to help aid in selecting your breast implants. This surgery does not require drains but will demand the use of support or sports bra for approximately four weeks following surgery.
