A labiaplasty is a surgical procedure to reduce the size or correct asymmetry of the labia minora. This procedure is performed in our office and generally takes 60-90 minutes. Patients are provided with numbing cream and anti-anxiety medications, if desired, prior to local anesthesia in the office. We use all dissolvable sutures to avoid having to remove sutures at a later date. The labia heals quickly and often with minimal scarring. Immediately after a labiaplasty a patient can expect some swelling and mild spotting as the local anesthetic wears off. We suggest wearing a feminine hygiene pad for a few days and applying topical over the counter triple antibiotic ointment (Neosporin, Polysporin, etc…) to the incisions. It is recommended to avoid sexual intercourse, exercise, or any other activity that could cause friction to the area for 4 weeks to allow the incisions to fully heal. A follow-up appointment is generally 2 weeks following the procedure and at the point the swelling should have nearly resolved. We provide pain medication for the immediate post-op course, however patients typically recover very quickly and transition to over the counter pain medications after a few days.
