Like all cosmetic surgeries, liposuction does leave scars. By choosing an experienced plastic surgeon, you have greater assurance of the surgeon’s ability to create only the most minimal incisions necessary.

Scars are formed by the incisions made during liposuction. There is no way to avoid scars, but liposuction involves some of the smallest incisions compared to other procedures. These incisions are generally just a fraction of an inch, depending on the specifics of your procedure. The extent and visibility of your liposuction scars may be influenced by:

  • Type of liposuction
  • Body area treated
  • Extent of treatment

Your scars will be most apparent for several months following liposuction. During this time, they are likely to appear pink or red, and raised. As they heal, they may start to look worse before they start to lighten and flatten. After about a year, your scars should be healed and much less noticeable.

As part of your consultation, we can show you before-and-after photos to help you decide whether the scar visibility is acceptable to you. Most patients are able to conceal their scars beneath clothes.
