What considerations are evaluated for the male body shape with regards to liposuction or an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)?

Although there is no “perfect” body shape, there are general accepted aesthetic guidelines for the male torso. Most often this includes a flat/defined abdomen and chest with narrower hips/flanks or “love handles.” As we age the body tends to accumulate fat, which is harder to control with diet and exercise. Typically in males, this fat accumulation centralizes to the abdomen, chest, and flanks or “love handles.” However, men tend to have greater skin elasticity, allowing their skin to “recoil” a little better than a woman the same age.

Males that are an appropriate candidate for liposuction tend to do very well due to their increased skin elasticity. Liposuction is an elective outpatient surgery to sculpt and contour areas of the body with excess fat. Liposuction is particularly beneficial for males seeking to contour their chest, abdomen, and/or flanks.

*It is important to note that neither liposuction nor an abdominoplasty, will address intra-abdominal fat (fat that is below the abdominal wall and surrounding your organs). Liposuction will only treat fat that is located subcutaneously (below the skin and above the abdominal wall).*

For men seeking to remove excess skin and fat, which is usually due to weight loss, will more likely benefit from an abdominoplasty with or without liposuction. An abdominoplasty is an elective outpatient surgery to excise/remove excess skin and fat from the lower aspect of the abdomen. Liposuction may be used in combination with an abdominoplasty (lipoabdominoplasty), to sculpt the torso better.

Following liposuction or an abdominoplasty, you must maintain a healthy diet and exercise to optimize your results. During your consultation with Florida Plastic Surgery Group, we will take into consideration your aesthetic goals and body type to help formulate a plan that best suits your needs.
