Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS)

ERAS is an evidence-based program that helps patients recover faster and with fewer complications after surgery. The goal is to get you back to normal activities as soon as possible while decreasing narcotic drug use which can lead to nausea, vomiting and slow recovery.

ERAS focuses on several non-narcotic drug classes to manage your surgical pain; you'll likely be given one from each group and a schedule of when to take them. Additionally, you'll receive pain control medications before, during, and after surgery. Pre-operative pain control medications are provided, such as Celebrex, Tylenol, or Gabapentin to help block any pain or discomfort before it starts. During surgery, you may receive an intraoperative non-opioid anesthetic block or local anesthetic injection that lasts up to four days after surgery. After surgery we make managing any discomfort easy with a medication log to understand what medication to take and when.

What potential prescriptions will I have following surgery for pain control?

  • Acetaminophen (Tylenol): You will buy this over the counter. DO NOT EXCEED 4,000mg of Tylenol/acetaminophen in 24 hours.
  • Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs): 800mg Ibuprofen (Motrin) taken up to three times daily, or Aleve taken up to twice daily to replace Ibuprofen.
  • Nerve-Related Pain: Gabapentin (Neurontin) can be taken three times daily for seven days.
  • Muscle relaxors: Muscle relaxors such as Flexeril can be prescribed to help with any muscle tightness to reduce discomfort.

Please notify your provider of all your medical conditions, medications, and allergies. Any
medical questions regarding medication interactions can be addressed with your pharmacist.
