Background and education

Dr. Rinkinen achieved his bachelor’s degree with top honors from Albion College in Michigan, where he dual-majored in chemistry and anthropology/sociology. While at Albion College, he pitched for the varsity baseball team and was named captain his senior year. He was also nominated as Regional Academic All-American and received scholarships for the number one graduating senior in both chemistry and sociology. 

The journey to excellence in plastic surgery

He then attended the University of Michigan, where he earned his Medical Doctorate with Distinctions in Research. His success in medical school helped him match into the Harvard Combined Plastic Surgery Residency Program.

Dr. Rinkinen served as Chief Resident at the Massachusetts General Hospital and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He was elected as Chief Resident Representative in his final year. 

After completing residency, Dr. Rinkinen completed a microsurgical fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, focusing on complex oncologic reconstruction, microsurgery, and lymphatic surgery.

Professional accomplishments: Publications, research, presentations

Over the course of Dr. Rinkinen’s academic career, he has published over 30 peer-reviewed papers. He has been invited to give over 20 presentations and abstracts at both regional and national meetings. His research interests focus primarily on preoperative risk stratification measures to minimize postoperative complications, patient-reported outcomes and satisfaction, and surgical outcome metrics.

Scope of practice

Clinically, Dr. Rinkinen’s practice encompasses both reconstructive and aesthetic procedures. He specializes in microsurgical breast reconstruction and oncologic reconstruction following head and neck, trunk, and surgeries for body extremities. 

He has a passion for aesthetic surgery, specifically rhinoplasty, facial rejuvenation, breast surgery, liposuction with fat grafting, and body contouring following weight loss procedures. Dr. Rinkinen is committed to providing individualized care by producing carefully designed treatment plans, listening to his patient’s goals, and providing safe and reliable results.
