Breast augmentation remains one of the most popular surgical options for cosmetic enhancement in the U.S. and has helped thousands of women achieve their goals with results that look both beautiful and natural. With that in mind, some individuals eventually decide to have their breast implants removed altogether, without replacing them with new implants. Whether patients choose permanent removal due to a simple desire to restore their original breast size or another reason, a customized breast implant removal procedure can help them meet their needs. One of the most common questions among women who have that procedure is: “What will the breasts look like after the implants are removed?” The answer may be a bit different for each patient. How the breasts will ultimately look following implant removal is dependent on the current condition of the breast tissue and how much the skin has “stretched” during the time the implants were in place.

A certain degree of breast ptosis (sagginess) may be present after breast implant removal since the breast tissues can appear a bit lax once the implants are taken out. If the breast implants are not replaced, this skin laxity may present an aesthetic concern for some patients. While many individuals do not experience an excessive amount of breast ptosis following implant removal, others may notice a pronounced sagging effect and wish to resolve the issue with treatment. A breast lift (mastopexy) can be performed at the same time as the breast implant removal procedure or in a later appointment to reduce excess skin and lift the breasts to a higher location on the chest, which can ultimately tighten the skin and create a more youthful breast projection. Patients who are prone to good skin elasticity may find that the skin naturally becomes tighter and firmer following breast implant removal; however, those who continue to experience sagging, inelastic skin after the implants are removed may benefit from a breast lift. Additionally, fat grafting can also be performed, in combination with breast lift surgery or on its own, to add natural volume to the breasts.
