Liposuction is the process of removing fat, via suction, from unwanted areas such as the abdomen, back, flanks/hips, chest, thighs, and arms. Before the procedure a numbing solution, called tumescent, is injected into the desired area(s) of fat removal. Tumescent is a solution typically composed of normal saline (salt water), lidocaine (numbing medication), and epinephrine (helps control bleeding during the procedure).
Tumescent liposuction is the most common form of liposuction, which allows for generalized numbing to the area(s) and decreases the bleeding during the procedure. After the tumescent has been injected, the fat is retrieved with a liposuction cannula, which is a long thin metal tube attached to a suction machine. The use of blunt cannulas to remove the fat minimize the potential damage to nerves or blood vessels in the area.
Depending on the location and the amount of liposuction desired, it can be performed under local anesthesia or in an elective outpatient surgical setting. In the initial postoperative period, there will be bruising, and a compression garment will need to be worn in the area of liposuction. The cannula entry point incisions are typically placed in areas that would not be seen and are less than 1cm in length. An appropriate liposuction candidate can expect that majority of the swelling and bruising should resolve within 4-6 weeks, but most people return to work in 1-2 weeks or less depending on the areas of liposuction and the amount of fat removed.
Liposuction surgery is an excellent option for those who have unwanted areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise providing a smoother overall contour and shape.
