Over the years, BOTOX® has achieved a longstanding safety record. Millions of BOTOX® injections are completed every year, with few reports of serious side effects. BOTOX® has been FDA approved for various non-cosmetic uses since 1989 and received FDA approval for cosmetic use in 2002.
Common and temporary side effects include:
- Bruising
- Swelling
- Redness
- Eyelid drooping
The rare complications of BOTOX® include nausea and other flu-like symptoms. These complications and others are more likely to occur when BOTOX® is improperly injected. People who are unqualified to inject BOTOX® may use an unsafe dosage or choose improper injection sites. Finding a qualified plastic surgeon or other healthcare professional experienced in these injections is critical to the safety of BOTOX®. Unqualified persons advertising the cosmetic injectable at discounted rates could be selling products that are not actually BOTOX® brand, and therefore unregulated by the FDA.
