Liposuction is the process of removing fat by suction via cannulas after numbing fluid (tumescent) is injected to the desired area of fat removal. Tumescent is a solution typically made up of normal saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine. Tumescent liposuction is the most common form of liposuction, which allows for generalized numbing to the area and decreases the bleeding during the procedure. The use of blunt cannulas minimize the damage to the nerves, blood vessels, and surrounding tissue. Depending on the location and the amount of liposuction desired, it can be performed under local anesthesia or in an outpatient surgical setting. Liposuction is most often used to remove excess fat and to shape the abdomen, hips/flanks, back, chest, and thighs. Liposuction is an excellent option for those areas which seem to persist after diet and exercise. Liposuction removes those fat cells allowing for a smoother overall contour and shape, though is not a solution for weight loss. In the initial post-operative period there will be bruising and a compression garment will need to be worn at the area of liposuction. Patients should report the use of any blood thinners, supplements, or NSAIDs (ibuprofen, Advil, Aleve, etc…) at your consultation. The incisions are typically placed in areas that are not be typically be seen and are less than 1cm in length. Your first post-operative appointment is generally 10-14 days after surgery and the compression garment should be worn during that time. We provide pain medication for the immediate post-operative course, however patients typically transition to over the counter pain medications after 1 week. A patient can expect that majority of the swelling and bruising should resolve in 4-6 weeks, but recovery is generally 1-2 weeks depending on the areas of liposuction.
