A lower blepharoplasty (or an eyelid lift) is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin from the lower eyelids. Excess skin in the lower eyelids results in skin laxity, excess skin, and overall lack of volume/firmness to the lower eyelids making the eyes appear sunken or causing a deep “tear troughs.” There are several factors that will be addressed during your consultation including:
- How much eyelid skin needs to be removed?
- Does fat need to be removed or repositioned to blend the lower lid/cheek junction?
- Would you benefit from another facial procedure at the time of surgery?
Often, fat is added to the cheeks via a liposuction process to add volume to the face and give a more youthful look with minimal downtime for recovery. A lower blepharoplasty is performed in an outpatient surgical setting and typically takes 90 minutes. Post-operatively you will be prescribed antibiotic eye drops, artificial tears, and pain medication. Patients typically experience mild to moderate bruising and swelling around the eyes for one week, which usually resolves by week three. You will have a follow-up appointment approximately five days following the procedure to evaluate your progress, and most patients return to work within 10 to 14 days.
