Recovering from breast augmentation surgery will take time. After all, this is an invasive surgery that you should take seriously. While it can take a full year before your breast implants have settled the way they are supposed to, the immediate recovery period will take weeks, rather than months.

Breast augmentation surgery will take one to two hours, and you will be under anesthesia. Because of the surgery and the anesthesia, you will be a little “off” for the next couple of days. You may feel drowsy and sleep much of this time. It is a good idea to have a friend or family member take care of you during this time. You will also have swelling and bruising. Some home remedies we suggest to relieve this include:

  • Cold compresses and ice packs from the drugstore
  • One part rubbing alcohol to three parts water stored in the freezer will leave a compress that is slushy and easy to form around the incision area
  • A frozen bag of peas placed near the area of swelling or the incision area

As soon as you are able, walk around. This reduces the threat of blood clots and reduces swelling. After about a week, you will be able to return to work as long as you avoid vigorous activity and get rest. Keep the incision areas dry, apply topical cream or ointment, and take antibiotics prescribed by Dr. Desai.

You may have notable swelling for several weeks and your breasts will be sensitive during this time. Avoid contact and strenuous activity or exercise until Dr. Desai tells you that you can resume your schedule. Incision scars will begin to fade after a couple of months.

Contact Dr. Desai immediately if you notice:

  • Discharge or pus from the incision or nipples
  • Excessive bleeding or blisters around the incision
  • Numbness in your legs
  • Displacement, extrusion, deflation, or bottoming out of implants
  • Uncontrollable dizziness, pain, or vomiting
  • Blood in urine or feces, or spitting up blood
